Tesla Reports 1.74M FSD Users
The company counts upfront FSD purchases as active subscriptions under a metric aligned with its CEO pay package.

Tesla reported 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions as of its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, a 67% increase from a year earlier. However, a footnote in the filing reveals that the count adheres to the methodology established for the 2025 CEO Performance Award. As a result, the metric includes both monthly payments and upfront purchases made by owners prior to February 14, 2026. This specific accounting method is significant because the achievement of 10 million active FSD subscriptions is a milestone required for Elon Musk's compensation package.
Tesla ceased selling Full Self-Driving as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026, and currently offers the software exclusively as a $99 monthly subscription in the United States. Despite this change, the company continues to count individuals who purchased the software for one-time fees reaching $15,000 in past years as active subscribers. The only exclusion from the active subscription data is free trials. Tesla previously reported 1.28 million subscriptions in April, but six months later, it has not clarified how many of the current 1.74 million users pay a recurring fee.
Tesla's Q3 2026 letter reports that over 75% of new deliveries in North America were attached to FSD subscriptions, representing a nearly twenty percentage point sequential increase. The company attributes this to FSD driving demand in markets where it is available. However, the filing does not define whether this figure includes introductory offers or clarify the retention rate for buyers who started subscriptions in previous quarters. While the active subscription metric excludes free trials, Tesla has not confirmed whether the attach rate adheres to the same standard.
Tesla added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in Q3 2026, which the company describes as its best quarter to date. At this quarterly rate, the company would require approximately eight years to reach the 10 million active FSD subscriptions milestone. Based on the pace of the last 12 months, which added roughly 700,000 subscriptions per year, the timeline extends to closer to 12 years. The CEO's award runs until 2035.
The company's cumulative deliveries figure, now at 10.2 million, also counts any unsupervised Robotaxis placed into commercial operation. This methodology aligns with the 2025 CEO Performance Award, which lists a 20 million vehicle delivery target among its requirements. As of June 30, 2026, Tesla considered only one of its operational milestones to be probable: reaching 20 million deliveries.
The 2025 award consists of 12 tranches, and each requires reaching a market cap milestone and one operational milestone. The operational targets include delivering 20 million vehicles, activating 10 million FSD subscriptions, manufacturing 1 million Optimus robots, and putting 1 million robotaxis into commercial operation, along with adjusted EBITDA targets. The current FSD subscription count represents 17.4% of the 10 million subscription target required for the award.
Tesla's current reporting combines historical one-time purchases with current monthly subscriptions under a single metric. This approach provides a figure that includes users who bought the software outright years ago. The company's ability to reach 10 million active FSD subscriptions by 2035 depends on future growth rates, which are not disclosed in the current filing. The company has not stated how many of the current 1.74 million FSD users pay a recurring monthly fee.
