For voters in Texas’ third congressional district, the daily rhythm of the midterm campaign has continued largely unchanged, even as federal authorities revealed a specific plot to target incumbent Rep. Keith Self. While the congressman has stepped up his personal security protocols, he has maintained his public presence, continuing to greet residents and attend local events without missing a scheduled appearance.
The incident centers on a 17-year-old resident of McKinney who was detained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Oct. 5. Campaign officials for the Republican lawmaker confirmed that their team was notified of the detention by U.S. Capitol Police the following day, on Oct. 6. At the time of the arrest, Self was in the midst of a campaign for his third term in office, facing a competitive election cycle as early voting proceeds across the state.
According to information shared with the congressman’s staff, federal investigators believed the teen had been radicalized and was under active monitoring by agents. The suspected plot involved a terrorist attack allegedly planned on behalf of the Islamic State (ISIS). The intended target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans, an event scheduled for Oct. 17 that was to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and other prominent guests.
Self stated that he responded to the news with a calm demeanor, citing his extensive military background. He noted that while the situation was serious, his prior deployments to combat zones helped him process the threat without excessive alarm. “I’m happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out,” Self said. “But in my case, it was a little more calm. I understood since the arrest had already taken place, we just needed to be aware of was he a lone wolf or not.”
The congressman’s wife, who spent 25 years as a military spouse, also helped frame the family’s response to the situation. Self noted that her experience sending him into combat multiple times meant she understood the inherent risks of public service. “She sent me off several times and so she’s taking it very seriously as well,” he said, adding that the couple viewed the incident as a serious event that required heightened awareness rather than panic.
Despite the arrest, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the venue, describing the event as a delightful occasion where nothing unexpected occurred. Since then, he has continued his standard campaign activities, including morning poll-greets and voter meetings, emphasizing that the threat would not deter his efforts to communicate his political message to the public.
The alleged plot gains additional context from Self’s recent legislative actions and local political debates. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and affirming that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. This stance aligns with local tensions in McKinney, where the city council unanimously approved a site plan for a mosque expansion in August. That decision followed hours of contentious public comment and was subsequently met with a recall effort against several council members.
Self’s opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, also reacted to the news by condemning the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. The teen’s identity has not yet been made public as the federal investigation remains active. While the FBI’s Dallas office has been contacted for further details, the congressman’s team remains focused on the next phase of the election, maintaining that the incident has not altered their overall strategy.
The situation highlights the increasing security considerations for members of Congress during high-stakes election cycles. For Self, the experience has reinforced the importance of situational awareness without forcing a retreat from public engagement. As he continues to campaign, the focus remains on informing voters about his platform while managing the new layer of security surrounding his presence in the district.
